Bird of Paradise
The Bird of Paradise plant, also known as the Crane Flower, is
originally native to South Africa and part of the stretlitizia family.
What make this plant so popular are its unique flowers. Their shape
resembles a bird in flight, which is the source of the plant’s name.
Additionally, the flowers, which traditionally bloom in September
through May, boast bold, brilliant colors like orange and purple. Their
petals are long and thin, sometimes reaching 8 inches in length. As for
the rest of the plant, the leaves on the Bird of Paradise are
reminiscent of small banana leaves. Thus, they are thick and waxy with a
rich green color. With proper care, a Bird of Paradise plant can reach
four to five feet in height.
To grow your own Bird of Paradise plants, you need to have the right
conditions. This plant fares best in rather moist soil, and prefers
quality peat-based potting soil for its roots. It also requires fairly
warm temperature, generally no lower than fifty degrees on a given day,
and a generous amount of sunlight. As for providing nutrients, the Bird
of Paradise should be fed every other week during its growing season and
once per month in the off season. The best type of food for this plant
is liquid, water-soluble fertilizer. Finally, be sure to water your Bird
of Paradise regularly and repot it as it grows to give it space. |
