Gardenias

Gardenias originated in the tropical regions of Africa and Asia. They are evergreen shrubs that can grow quite tall, to the point where they appear to be trees. Gardenias are cultivated around the world for their flowers, which are exceptionally fragrant. Although the most popular plants feature white petals, flowers also come in pale yellow hues. Each flower features between five and twelve lobe petals and reaches up to five inches in diameter. They usually bloom in the mid-spring or mid-summer. Gardenias also have waxy green leaves that achieve a deep green color. The leaves grow in whorls of three or four and achieve a thick, leather texture.

Gardenias are commonly grown as screening hedges in outdoor gardens. They should be planted in a loose organic soil with good drainage and added compost. Although Gardenias require ample sunlight, they can be grown in areas that possess partial or shifting shade. They require high humidity levels, which can be supplemented by frequent misting. However, Gardenias should not be overwatered. As for the temperature, Gardenias thrive in climates that have an average daily temperature between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, Gardenias need to be fertilized with an acidic fertilizer every three weeks during the growing season. To keep growth in check, you can prune Gardenias regularly. You may also trim off the flowers to use as decoration or in bouquets. Finally, be sure to do a regular check of Gardenias for common pests. These plants frequently fall victim to aphids, spider mites, trips, and other insects
